What
is Somatic Patterning?
Somatic Patterning is a blend of somatics and patterning—two widely
used approaches for changing patterns of poor posture and movement. Somatics
refers to the body in all its realms —mental, emotional, and physical.
It also refers to alternative movement therapies such as Alexander, Feldenkrais,
Rolfing, and even Pilates. These diverse approaches all share one primary
therapeutic tool—body-mind awareness. Patterning is the intentional
method of changing body patterns to improve joint and muscle function.
Most traditional patterning protocols, such as those used in physical
therapy and ergonomics, are based on biomechanics.
How
do poor posture and faulty movement lead to pain and injury?
They create faulty body mechanics and distorted body awareness, which
lead to muscle spasm, injury, and chronic pain. If you are a massage therapist,
bodyworker, or somatics practitioner, you know how important body awareness
and good mechanics are for preventing chronic pain and burnout
